First Baptist Church in Boston (fourth) is dedicated.

January 11, 1855

Also known as the Somerset Baptist Church, it is designed in the Gothic style with a tall steeple and located on Somerset Street. The congregation meets here for the last time on May 24, 1877, then merges with and moves to the Shawmut Avenue Baptist Church (fifth) on June 3, 1877, and to Commonwealth Avenue (sixth) in 1873.* The Somerset Street building is subsequently occupied by the First Free-Will Baptist Church. It is purchased by Boston University in 1882 and subsequently demolished to make way for construction of Jacob Sleeper Hall. The Baptist congregation moves to its current building (sixth) in the Back Bay in 1882.*
